So its been forever and a day since I've posted, so here's some random mumblings...

Been going up to bristol and playing in the falls, Kibi loves to "fish" for floating leaves which is great fun to watch...

Went home for memorial day and dad's birthday, saw lots of family and some true midwest thunderstorms, and got to hang out with dad's new dog, fuzzy, who is the worlds most mello border collie :)

Saw mom's new house out in Burr Oak, very cool, too bad it is really in the middle of nowhere...visited the center of the US while there, my mom's mom grew up right near there, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geographic_Center_of_the_Contiguous_United_States, if you've read American Gods, you will have a more amusing perspective of this point of geography.

Garden is a disaster, all my good intentions to get the kitchen garden started this year have gone to seed so to speak...so my goal at this point is to just get it weeded and transplant a bunch of perennials out of the way so I can start it next year...

I did finally get the living room and downstairs picked up, which felt great, and then we promptly had lots of people over for several weekends for brunch, surprise visits (thanks [info]metasilk and then a large fathers day weekend, which was great, but a bit overwhelming (last weekend we had my sister and friend and DAW's brother and friend both stay over one night, very cool but again, lots of bodies in a small place).

I'm back to taking an exercise class with my dance teacher once a week, which is great, but lots of sore muscles in new places. I've been trying to exercise every morning and evening and have finally actually seen a small movement of the scales downward, which is encouraging, although I fully expect it to go back up any day, I never seem to lose weight when I am actually watching..sort of the watched pot never boils theory. I've also been making it to lots more contra dances now that I've found a dance buddy who's willing to prod for dance company, which is a really enjoyable way to exercise one's butt off :)

Summer time off currently revolves around the Falconridge Folk Festival with my sister and a long weekend of camping at the waterbury reservoir, hopefully that will be enough time "off grid" to give me a chance at retaining my equilibrium for fall semester.

OH! and the really big news is that I have been off of the condo board this year! Its awesome! Of course no maintenance work at the condo has happened, no board minutes have come out, so I may only last another few months before I have to step back in and see if I can get something done, or find proof that they are doing something, but for the past 6 months I have indeed been board stress free, which has been AMAZING!!!!!

They found Nick Garza's body in the middlebury falls pool this evening :P I'm glad for his family that he has been found, but very very sad event.

    nose update
So...its still doing pretty well, a bit achy and annoying, but not too bad. Unfortunately because it is spring, I'm snuffly, which is not a real great thing right now, but if I blow carefully, even that is not completely evil :P We are enjoying the beautiful spring weather, and the seeds I did manage to plant a few weeks ago are growing noticibly every day, which is highly amusing.

    nose fixed
Ok, so the good news is that I was only miserable for the day of the surgery, bit woozy, and odd pain spots, but today (the day after) it feels pretty good, no new swelling, no black eyes, and so far I haven't knocked the nose brace off :) The main frustration at this point is that my nose is stuffed up with allergies because it is spring, and trying to blow my nose with this brace on is really annoying.

Today I got to putter in the garden, murder a rogue rose bush, dr. t came and helped work on the kitchen floor a bit, and this evening david and I widened one of the cupboards in the kitchen that has been annoying me since we moved in, and I got to walk the dogs for about three hours, all in all a great enjoyment of spring with all sorts of random little bits of accomplishment and so far no new damage to the nose, so a great success :)

    nose fun continues
So tomorrow the nose surgeon gets to straighten my nose back out :P Just as the swelling is going away and it is less achy of course, so I'm assuming it will be back to square one on the swelling and such after they mess with it, ah well :P The good news is that it is a beautiful spring day and I went and weeded a bit and put our seedlings out in the sun, I think they may be doubling by the minute, whee! I'm not sure we actually planted them soon enough, but guess either way we can use them, we just may need to buy a few tomato seedlings after all...I'm hoping to tear up the main patio bed and replant it, but not sure of timing since I'm probably not going to be comfortably looking downward the rest of this weekend and possibly part of next weekend....

    oops
Ok, so spring is here, and I got a little carried away celebrating that fact...
Friday I went to bed knowing it was going to be rainy and yucky all day sat, and so I planned to stay at home and get everything prepped to come see my sister in boston this weekend (I'm writing this on her machine). Fortunately or unfortuately, when I got up on Sat, it was GORGEOUS out, so I scrapped all sensible plans, called bodies and set up a hike up mt philo instead. In the process of trying to recruit solon and family, i found out they were pruning apple trees and cleaing brush, and having done that kinda work with family in the past, I went and helped do that for a few hours before the hike, which was great exersize, ended up overheating and stripping down to bdu's and a jog bra, and only got minorly scratched up dragging downed trees in this outfit, two scratched knuckles, and very very muddy, so all is good. We headed up to mt. philo and met dr. t there, and all headed up, collecting broken sled bits on the way up and avoiding large patches of snow, which apparently are refusing to die. Then when we had almost reached the bottom, I looked back over my shoulder and saw that solon and family were taking a shortcut, so I decided to run down the road to cut them off, but unfortunately did not properly communicate this to kibi before I stepped forward, and so I turned to jog down, and instead got my right foot swept out from under me and then promptly landed nose first on the road pavement....that is where the oops comes in....got up with blood dripping from not sure where, and poor dt t got to pick me up and help corral dogs and broken glasses, while we tried to find anything to soak up the blood and wouldn't you know this is the one and only time I hike with no paper towel or kleenex, grrr, so I got to use my sleeve to get the dripping to stop, although there was actually pretty little of that, and that is how I managed to then spend the weekend drinking my way through boston with my sister, with a broken nose.

The good news is that it doesn't hurt that much, just looks bad, wed I get to get the surgeon to look at it, and if they decide it needs fixing, then I get to do that on friday, so we will see how that goes, wish me luck!

    Sock heaven
Ok, I'm in deeeep trouble...UrsulaV posted this url on her LJ, and I'm doomed!

    http://www.sockdreams.com/_shop/edit/index.php
If you are a lover of socks, then don't go visit this url, because then you too will be sucked into the world of an overflowing sock drawer...I'm using this as the perfect excuse to purge all those mismatched or saggy socks that have drifted to the back and are just taking up room and am going to slowly start adding some new ones from this extremely tempting site :P

    snow
Ok, I love snow, and love living in a snowy state, but this is getting a bit silly...
We were in DC last week for a work conference and took two days to visit one of my college roommates, and on friday we were out playing wiffle ball with Nancy's two kids, in shorts and t-shirts, only to come back to more storm warnings and the threat of another ice storm! Enough already!

DC was fun and mello, we went to the Freer Gallery and the Sackler Gallery, neither of which I knew existed before, so that was cool, saw a great asian art exhibit and bought the book from it. I was highly amused to realize that DAW and I are really weird museum viewers, and probably best to not go with other people...we spent about an hour in a korean pottery exhibit, that only had three pieces in it, looking at the patterns and trying to figure out if we could turn them into a knitted pattern for the 4 corner hats, and we spent another hour plus in the asian art exhibit looking at the patterns on the kimono's in the painting and comparing geometric designs and color combinations, not sure what kind of geeks we are, but there's no doubt we are truly weird, thankfully we are very compatible geeks :) I tried to tell my coworkers what we had done and decided that it was best left undescribed. Oh, and we spent an hour or so looking at the mineral section of the national history museum, rocks are cool.

    reading coma
Ok, I've emerged from my reading coma...got so sucked into the 9 Robin Hobb's books that everything has suffered, laundry, vacuuming, knitting, paying bills, well, just everything :P The good news is they were great books, I really really enjoyed them, but I feel like I'm waking up two weeks later, just in time to be gone for a week for a conference and that combined with hockey means that the condo is just gross and needs a MAJOR spring cleaning/rearrangement, and to make that even worse, we are both gone next week to a conference and then short vacation in DC, so oh boy, cleaning will be the only weekend agenda item once hockey is done!

We are starting to get brief glimpses of Spring through the snow piles, just enough for torture, not enough to actually be, well, spring :)

And the student is still missing from campus...which has created this weird low level continual anxiety at the back of my brain, his mom has been at the hockey games recently :P

Oh, and I finally got time booked to go home, so I will be in Kansas the week before memorial day!

    I love vermont
On VPR a few days ago they were talking about a new bill in the legislature, apparently when Peter Welsh was visiting soldiers in Iraq and asked him what he could do for them, they said moose licenses, and so there is now a mini lottery just for Iraq veterans for moose licenses :) The other vermont initiative is the maple syrup donations that the maple syrup association send over, I think it was 500 gallons last year and they are aiming for 1000 gallons this year.

    music and book mumbles
I got hooked on a new series, or I guess three trilogies recently, all by Robin Hobb, and all based in the same world...
    The Farseer Trilogy
    The Liveship Traders Trilogy
and I haven't gotten to it yet, but I'm sure I'll be sucked in, the Tawny Man trilogy.

She does have as much propensity to torture main characters as George RR Martin, but I still found myself staying up til all hours and skipping knitting to read more (horror!) So anyone waiting for a hat, um, blame the sales guy in Borders who handed me Assassin's Apprentice and asked if I'd read it.

On the music side of life, I've been really needing to reload my mp3 player before I totally hate the music on it forever, and was finally nudged off my butt by, of all things odd, american idol...I completely fell hook line and sinker for one of the contestants who didn't make it into the final 24, but lucky for me, it turns out he has several ep's for sale on myspace and several youtube videos, so I've been a Josiah Leming fanatic the past few days, and have now purchased his music and his brothers, which forced me to finally reload the music :)
    http://www.myspace.com/josiahleming

and thankfully now that he has been booted I can stop watching american idol!
Hockey is again swallowing my weekends, and well....snow...and more snow...and um, yeah, more snow!!!!!!!

    Snow!
We have big beautiful snow flakes today, lots and lots and lots and lots of them :)
I waited for the bus for almost an hour and finally decided that even if it came, I'd rather not get stuck in burlington after all, so instead I get to work from home and hang out with the dogs today, I think this is a great birthday present from the weather man :)

    small world
Ok, the world is a small place...One of my favorite beers is the Allagash White, which I just found out is made in a brewery that was started by one of my college classmates! Amusingly enough most of my memories of him at college were of him drunk...

    mmmm...
So my morning started off with a call from another condo owner asking if I could help deal with a trash situation, and I merrily directed her to call a current board member....and then went and cleaned up the mess and let the board member know I'd make a sign. It was very nice to point the complainer in another direction, and I have never minded the work part, so this may end up being the perfect solution, I can be the gremlin behind the scenes *evil laugh*

And as for my bad mood because of board crap....today it is winter, there is beautiful snow, there is hockey and there is football tomorrow, and I just got to listen to a great radio program on VPR with an interview with Levon Helm about his new album, so life is good :)

Now I've just gotta get to woodstock to go to one of Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble shows!!!!! Check out www.levonhelm.com if you like his music, its really a nice site. Of course it helps that I've been a fan of The Band since I was 9.

    f@#k
Well, the board meeting is over, Ms. nasty went after me and the budget and ignored everything I tried to clarify about the damn roofs, neither of the new board members bothered to come, and one of the existing board members sat there in obvious pain as Ms. Nasty let me have it, so I can pretty much guarentee that he is about to move. I'd been willing to stay on to help with the maintenance committee, but after that meeting, I'm sitting here in the midst of a panic attack, an anxiety attack, hyperventillating, furious, sad, crying and in general really damn pissed....and in no way willing to ever be in another board meeting, but this is my damn home! Argh! So I'm going to write up the maintenance info that I've gathered, and hand it over to everyone on the board and then try to avoid ever seeing a certain member ever again.

    deep breath
Ok, I think I'm finally reaching the "this too shall pass" stage with the condo board! Our annual meeting for 2008 is tonight, at which I have to get two new board members elected and get the budget vote processed, I don't care whether the budget passes at this point...Ms. Nasty Board Member is against it for reasons I can't quite wrap my brain around, but I've bent over in triplicate for her and if she still isn't happy, then so be it.

Unfortunately Ms. Nasty has scared off several people who were coming to the meetings, and helped to resolve another board members decision to sell (he's actively looking for a house to get away from her), so it really isn't just me being sensitive at this point, this woman is psychotic and irrational...

I spent two hours getting proxy votes last night and then another two hours filing all the misc. stuff I've collected into the board files, and am very excited to say that the files are all ready to be handed to someone else and out of my hallway! Wheee!!!

I think I'm still going to be on the maintenance committee, which could be a lot of work getting contractors for work this summer, but if I don't also have to wrangle the board and be the secretary and the general peacemaker, it seems much more doable. I'm already thinking about projects to do in our condo, being free of all the anxiety and stress of being on the board may actually give me enough braincells and energy to finish our kitchen!
